Banana blossom

The flower of banana tree, teardrop-shaped and purple with leaf-like petals. The inner parts are edible and can be served raw (in salads) or cooked (in soups).

To prepare, slice off the bottom and peel off the outer layers. Banana blossoms turn brown quickly upon slicing, so put them in a bowl of acidulated water.
